The Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins open their 2016 season Tuesday night at Marlins Park.
The Detroit Tigers have the potential to be a bounce back team this season with Justin Upton and Cameron Maybin added to the roster. With Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera already on the squad, the Tigers have the potential to score a boatload of runs this season. The Tigers will have something to say this season in what will be a competitive AL Central. The question for the Detroit Tigers is a pitching rotation that had an ERA of 4.64 last season and allowed 193 home runs, which was the most in the majors. Justin Verlander gets the ball, and he was 5-8 with a 3.38 ERA and 113 strikeouts last season. This will be Verlander’s second career game against the Marlins.

The Miami Marlins hope to be a bounce back team after last season was full of injuries and disappointment. The Marlins have a manager in former Dodgers skipper, Don Mattingly, who hopes to keep this team in the thick of the NL East. Giancarlo Stanton and Dee Gordon will carry the Miami offense, but guys such as Marcell Ozuna and Martin Prado must start playing to their potential. The Miami Marlins will be a team to keep a close eye on this season, as there’s some potential here. Wei-Yin Chen takes the hill, and he was 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA and 153 strikeouts last season. Chen is 1-0 with a 7.53 ERA and 15 strikeouts in his career against the Tigers.
The Tigers are 8-3 in their last 11 vs. National League East and 6-14 in Verlanders last 20 starts on grass. The Marlins are 5-0 in their last 5 vs. American League Central and 2-7 in their last 9 interleague games. The Tigers are 1-5 in the last 6 meetings in Miami and 0-4 in the last 4 meetings overall.
Verlander wasn't himself last season, and you have to be hesitant on jumping on him this early until he shows flashes of being him CY Young winning self. I love the talent the Marlins have, and they'll be eager to get off to a fast start after the way things unfolded last season. In a game that could go either way, I'm siding with the home team.
