The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres will bring their opening three game series to a finish on Wednesday when they face off in Petco Park.
The Dodgers turn to Kenta Maeda , who cost them $20 million in January and could ith incentives be a very expensive aquisition if he continues to show the strong form he displayed in Spring training. Maeda is a precision and command pitcher who's best pitch is his nasty curveball with a lifetime bb/9 of 1.9 he is a pitcher that can definitely help the dodgers win if he continues that type of success in the Majors. The Dodger are now 2-0 on the season with two impressive performances from their pitching aces. The Dodgers could complete the sweep here with a win which to be fair looks likely as the Dodgers pitching has been light out and the Dodgers Bats were alive in game one accounting for 15 runs without a home run. Yasiel Puig, Chase Utley and Adrian Gonzalez all had multiple hit games and the Dodgers followed up that with quality when they needed it on Tuesday with Korey Seager, Gonzalez and Puig all gettng back to back hits against James Shields. Puig's triple over the head of Jon Jay in centre field scored two and was a beautiful swing. The Dodger's outfielder looks more focused this season and a break out year could be on the cards for Puig who has all the tools to be an MVP candidate.
The San Diego Padres were terrible on Monday and got shut out again on Tuesday. This team doesnt look horrible on paper but right now the Padres need some inspiration and they will turn to Andrew Cashner on Wednesday who will be looking for a bounce back year after going 6-16 in 31 starts last year. Obviously the bats need to wake up for the Padres having just 4 hits on Monday and two on Tuesday but that was against Clayton Kershaw and Scott Kazmir who both have alot of MLB experience. On Wednesday they face the somewhat untested Maeda and they simply must get something going offensively or the Padres and their fans are in for a long season. It's tough to have any faith in the Padres right now though with their offence struggling so much.
While I think Cashner can bounce back here I am not sure that the Padres are going to be able to help him out with offence. Cashner's stats have been pretty solid despite his W/L record and an ERA of 2.65 with 16 losses last year is indicative that he was really receiving no run support, which if the opening two games of the season are anything to go by looks like it may continue. I'm going to take the under in this one as I think it looks the best play.
Dodgers are 5-0 last five against NL West, Under is 12-2 in Dodgers last 14 Wednesday games, Under is 11-3 in Dodgers last 14 game three of a series.
Padres are 4-10 in Cashners last 14 home starts , Padres are 0-5 in games against nl west, Under is 4-1-1 Padres last 6 home games.
