The St Louis Cardinals travel to Turner Field to open a series with the Atlanta Braves.
The St Louis Cardinals are looking for their first win of the season after getting swept in their three game set. The Cardinals suffered a 5-1 defeat to the Pirates on Wednesday with neither the arms or the bats able to come through. Starter Mike Leake lost his St Louis debut with four runs scored on seven hits and a trio of bases on balls over 4.1 frames. His performance didn’t really matter with the offense only able to muster four hits and a pair of walks with a solo homer off the bat of Jeremy Hazelbaker accounting for the offense. Veteran left hander Jaime Garcia gets his first start of the season when he opposes the Braves. Garcia faced Atlanta once in 2015 and absorbed a 4-0 defeat with two runs scored on six hits over four frames.

The Atlanta Braves were hoping for a quick start out of the gate to build some confidence but were outscored 7-4 in a pair of losses to visiting Washington. The Braves pitching was outstanding in a 3-1 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday but the offense never got going. Starter Bud Norris threw the ball well enough to win with all three runs plated on six hits and a pair of free passes through seven innings of work. The offense had some opportunities on eight hits and three walks but only saw AJ Pierzynski drive in Nick Markakis for the lone run with Adonis Garcia the only Braves threat with a three hit performance. The Braves hand the ball to youngster Matt Wisler for the first time in 2016. Wisler faced the Cardinals twice a year ago and gave up a pair of runs in 15.2 innings including a four hit shutout.
