The Toronto Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox in their series opener on Friday.
The Boston Red Sox are in need of a quick start to erase the memory of recent seasons. It’s too early to tell if a quick start is in the cards but a 7-6 loss at Progressive Field on Wednesday was a step in the wrong direction. Starter Clay Buchholz struggled early with five runs given up on six hits and a trio of BB over four frames which gave the pen no room for error. The offense held up their end of the bargain with ten hits and three walks that featured homers from David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez and Brock Holt who was 2-2 with two runs and a pair of runs driven in. The Red Sox turn to Joe Kelly on the mound for his third career start against the Indians. Kelly defeated Cleveland 6-4 in 2015 with one unearned run allowed on five hits and three BB in six frames.

The Toronto Blue Jays felt the sting of another late inning pitching meltdown for the second straight day. The Tampa Bay Rays used a three run 8th to rally past the Blue Jays 5-3 on Wednesday night. In the process a great outing by JA Happ went by the wayside with two runs allowed through six innings of work with Gavin Floyd giving up a pair while Arnold Leon gave up one. The potent Toronto attack was held in check on six hits and a pair of bases on balls with Josh Donaldson providing the fireworks with a three run jack in the third that scored Ezequiel Carrera and Darwin Barney. Toronto hands the ball to Marcus Stroman for his second start of the young season. Stroman comes off of a 5-3 victory at Tampa Bay where he allowed all three runs on six hits through eight innings in the season opener.
The over is 7-2-1 in Boston last 10 Friday games and Boston are 8-3 in their last 11 Friday games while the over is 8-1-1 in Kelly’s last 10 starts overall. The over is 5-1-3 in Toronto last 9 home games and Toronto are 45-20 in their last 65 home games while going 31-15 in their last 46 games on astroturf. Boston are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Toronto and the under is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings in Toronto. I like Stroman and will back him here and update…
