The Philadelphia Phillies host the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday.
The San Diego Padres don’t look like they can win by their pitching alone so offense is a definite requirement. The offense cost them Tuesday in a 3-0 defeat at Philadelphia and in the process squandered a great effort on the mound from Robbie Erlin who allowed a lone run through six frames to fall to 1-1. Kevin Quackenbush gave up a pair of runs in 1/3 of an inning on two hits and a pair of walks to put the game out of reach for an offense that logged four hits and five bases on balls with Melvin Upton Jr. going 2-3 with a walk. Collin Rea toes the rubber for the second time in 2016 when he faces Philadelphia on Wednesday. Rea did not get a decision in a 13-6 win at Colorado with five runs plated on six hits and four BB in 3.1 frames.

As a Philadelphia Phillies fan I know we aren’t going anywhere but I’m so happy we have gotten instantly younger so there is possibly a future. I think the pitching might be the Phillies strength and it certainly was Tuesday with a three hitter over six frames to even his record at 1-1 while three relievers put up zeros. The Phils managed just four hits and walked five times with Odubel Herrera rapping an RBI triple with Maikel Franco knocking in a run on a double play ground out. Jerad Eickhoff gets his first career start versus the Padres on Wednesday night. Eickhoff dropped his season opener 7-2 at the Mets with three runs allowed (two earned) on five hits and two walks over five innings.
The over is 25-8-1 in San Diego last 34 road games and is 8-3-3 in their last 14 Wednesday games while San Diego are 4-10 in their last 14 overall. The over is 6-2-1 in Philadelphia last 9 Wednesday games and is 37-14-6 in their last 57 home games while Philadelphia are 20-42 in their last 62 Wednesday games. San Diego are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings in Philadelphia and are 16-37 in the last 53 meetings. I’m going with Philadelphia and will have my fingers crossed…
