The Detroit Tigers travel to Minute Maid Park to open a series with the Houston Astros.
The Detroit Tigers are looking strong as ever to begin 2016 so the question is whether the winning continues over the long schedule. The Tigers continued to play well following Thursday’s 7-4 win at Pittsburgh. Jordan Zimmerman tossed a six hit shutout over six frames to improve to 2-0 before Drew VerHagen gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. The bats logged nine hits and walked three times with Nick Castellanos going 3-4 with a three run jack and a pair of runs while JD Martinez drove in a run and scored twice off of a pair of walks. Mike Pelfrey looks to rebound from his opening start struggles when he gets the ball versus the Astros on Thursday. Pelfrey lost to the Yankees 8-4 with six runs plated on eight hits in 3.2 frames.

The Houston Astros have yet to find their winning form of a season ago although it is far too early to worry about this team. However the Astros struggles continued with the work at the plate and on the mound failing to come up big in Thursday’s 6-2 defeat to visiting Kansas City. Starter Doug Fister suffered through a five run 6th and was charged with all six runs on nine hits over 5.2 frames to absorb the loss. The offense didn’t carry their part of the load with five hits and a pair of free passes with Jose Altuve smacking his third homer with Carlos Correa driving in Evan Gattis. Dallas Keuchel toes the rubber for the third time when the Tigers pay a visit Thursday. Keuchel fell to 1-1 with a 3-2 loss at Milwaukee with all three runs allowed on six hits and six BB over 5.2 innings.
Detroit are 6-2 in their last 8 overall and are 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass while going 3-8 in their last 11 Friday games. Houston are 2-6 in their last 8 overall and are 2-6 in their last 8 games on grass while the over is 8-3 in their last 11 overall. I’m not entirely confident here so take this with a grain of salt…
