Kicking off our MLB weekend on Friday evening, we’ve got an interesting cross-country matchup between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. This will be game one of the series.
The Mariners are coming off a mid-week series with the Rangers, during which they took one of three games. Seattle was outscored 15-3 in their two losses in that matchup.
As for the Yankees, they just finished up a three-game series with the Blue Jays, winning the first, dropping the second and falling 4-2 in the third on Thursday to lose the series 2-1.
During Friday’s game one of this series, the Mariners will be whipping out right-hander Nathan Karns. In his lone appearance thus far, Karns posted a loss in five innings pitched, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. Karns will need to start pitching well in order to keep his spot in the rotation.
As for the Mariners hitters, they’ve got some noteworthy talent but have struggled with consistency thus far. Norichika Aoki leads the team in hits (10) but has just one RBI and two runs. Robinson Cano has a whopping five homers and eight RBI but only five runs. Kyle Seager has seven runs but is batting a paltry .152 on the season. There’s definitely a pattern in Seattle.

Over on the Yankees side, we’ll be seeing right-hander Luis Severino take the mound in Friday’s game. Severino was pretty ugly in his first start this season, allowing three runs on 10 hits over five innings against the Tigers. That gives Severino a 2.00 WHIP and a 5.40 ERA.
Now let’s check out the familiar bats of New York. Starlin Castro has been an early contributor, with nine hits and nine RBI. Castro went 0-for-3 on Thursday. Jacoby Ellsbury has also played well, with nine hits and five RBI. That said, Ellsbury also went 0-for-3 on Thursday. Although he’s fought some injury issues already this year, Brian McCann has 10 runs and 10 hits already, going 1-for-4 in the Blue Jays finale.
Getting over to the current trends, we can see some negatives on both sides. The Mariners are just 1-4 in their last five Friday games, and 1-5 in their last six overall.
As for the Yankees, they’re 1-4 in their last five game ones of a series, and 1-4 in their last five against a team with a winning percentage below .400.
This pitching matchup looks pretty gross, so I’m not happy about either team. That said, I’ll take the Mariners to get a victory in a tight, high-scoring game.
