The Arizona Diamondbacks face the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Saturday for game 2 of a 3 game series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks won a thriller on Friday night 3-2 with the Padres loading the bases with only one out in the ninth before grounding into a game ending double play. Shelby Miller will get the ball for the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Over two starts Miller has given up fifteen hits and 10 runs and is really struggling to get control, giving up five long balls already this season. The D-backs will be hoping for a bounce back from Miller against a Padres line up that is struggling offensively. For the Diamondbacks Jean Segura has 15 hits, 3 home runs and is batting at .366. Paul Goldschmidt is still struggling batting .200 but he leads the team in RBI’s with 9.
USA TODAY Sports
The San Diego Padres have now lost four in a row and have only scored three runs over those four games. The Padres got a solid outing from James Shields on Friday but were unable to convert it to a win. On Saturday the Padres will turn to Andrew Cashner who has had a rough start to the season and owns a 0-1 record with an 8.00 ERA. Cashner has given up 13 hits and 8 runs over 9 innings this season. Cashner has yet to go beyond five innings, something he will need to address if the Padres are to win when he starts. For the Padres offensively Matt Kemp has been doing everything leading the way with 11 hits , 3 home runs, and a batting average of .275. The Padres need more offense and they need it now.
Padres are 1-7 in their last 8 against a team with a losing record, 1-4 in Cashner’s last 5 home starts and are 1-6 in Cashner’s last seven home starts. The under is 5-0 in the Diamondbacks last 5 road games and 5-1 in their last six overall. The Diamondbacks are 1-4 in their last 5 games overall.
I am going to go with the Diamondbacks here as Shelby Miller showed some improvement last time out and I expect him to be better again on Saturday. A solid start for Miller should be enough to stifle this Padres team.
