The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs face off on Tuesday for game two of their MLB NL Central rivalry series.
The St. Louis Cardinals had won six of their last seven heading into Monday’s game but they were unable to mount any offense to speak of falling to the Cubs. Matt Carpenter, Yadier Molina, and Matt Holliday each had hits but the Cardinals failed to score on five hits. Starting pitcher Mike Leake allowed six hits and four runs, three earned while striking out six over 7.0 innings but took the loss to fall to 0-2 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Cardinals start Jaime Garcia who has allowed six hits and four runs while striking out 19 over 15 innings for a 1-0 record and a 2.40 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs bounced back from losing two of three over the weekend to the Colorado Rockies to break open a scoreless game and beat the Cardinals on Monday. Dexter Fowler had two hits including a home run, Kris Bryant had two hits, and Ben Zobrist added a hit as the Cubs scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher John Lackey allowed four hits and struck out 11 over 7.0 scoreless innings to get the win and raise his record to 3-0. For Tuesday’s game the Cubs start Jason Hammel who has allowed eight hits and a run while striking out nine over 12 innings for a 1-0 record and 0.75 ERA.
The Cubs have won five of their last seven games against the Cardinals.
I still haven’t bought into the Cubs hype machine and at St. Louis looking for back-to-back wins doesn’t seem like a good spot to jump aboard now.
