The San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks face off Wednesday in game three of their MLB series of National League West teams.
The San Francisco Giants fell behind early on Tuesday and never mounted enough offense to challenge as they fell to the Diamondbacks for the second night in a row. Matt Duffy had two hits and Joe Panik, Buster Posey, and Hunter Pence each had hits as the Giants failed to score on six hits. Starting pitcher Matt Cain allowed five hits and three runs while striking out two over 4.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-2 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Giants start Madison Bumgarner who has allowed 19 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 21 over 16 innings for a 1-1 record and a 4.50 ERA.

The Arizona Diamondbacks won on Tuesday for their third win in a row. Chris Owings had two hits and David Peralta and Jean Segura each had hits as the Diamondbacks scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Robbie Ray allowed five hits and struck out eight over 6.0 innings to get the win and Tyler Clippard earned his first save. For Wednesday’s game the Diamondbacks start Zack Greinke who has allowed 22 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 15 over 17.1 innings for a 0-2 record and a 6.75 ERA.
San Francisco is 22-9 in their last 31 home games against a right-handed starter, 2-6 against the spread in their last eight home games against a team with a losing record, 1-6 in their last seven games, and 7-3 in Bumgarner’s last 10 home starts. Arizona is 1-5 against a left-handed starter, 2-8 in their last 10 Wednesday games, and 17-48 in their last 65 road games against a team with a winning home record. Arizona is 5-1 in their last six games against Arizona.
The total in this one has been set aggressively low and while these pitchers are talented and at the top of their game and are some of the best in baseball they haven’t played that well thus far this season.
