The San Diego Padres look for an encore performance on Thursday night after pasting the Pittsburgh Pirates at home yesterday.
The Pirates head into Thursday’s encounter looking to get their offense rolling as they were limited to just two runs on the road in San Diego last night and conceded eight runs to a light hitting team which can’t be good for their confidence in this young season. The Pirates are now 7-8 on the season and have underachieved through their first 15 contests and while the baseball season is in its infancy there is a bit of a concern with their rotation as it hasn’t been up to par thus far and is a huge contributor to their overall team dynamic. Pittsburgh is in a bit better shape heading into this one though as they have Gerrit Cole on the bump and while he is 0-2 with a 4.22 ERA so far he is one of the best young arms in the game and will be looking for his first win of the year.

The Padres meanwhile will counter with their big arm as James Shields will be on the bump in what should be a much lower scoring affair than the 8-2 final we saw last night. San Diego doesn’t have a great roster from top to bottom but they have put up runs in droves this season and have a handful of games in the double digits in runs scored and another outbreak last night as they hung eight on the Bucs. San Diego will need a strong outing from Shields who is also 0-2 this season with a 4.05 ERA and face some scary trends against a Pirates side that plays very well for their young ace. The Pirates are 9-1 in their last 10 Cole starts against the NL West and 20-7 in his last 27 against teams with a losing record and after getting embarrassed last night for most of the game but coming on strong at the end I think the Pirates bounce back and lay the wood to Shields.
