The San Diego Padres and the St, Louis Cardinals face off on Saturday in game two of their MLB series.
The San Diego Padres jumped out to an early lead on Friday and they never looked back as they cruised to a win over the Cardinals. Wil Myers had three hits including a home run and John Jay and Jemile Weeks each had hits as the Padres scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner allowed three hits and a run while striking out four over 6.0 innings to get the win and Fernando Rodney earned his third save. For Saturday’s game the Padres start Cesar Vargas who makes his first Major League start. Vargas has been lights out for the Padres farm system going 6-0 with a 2.79 ERA last season with AA Trenton and he has a 1.42 ERA over 12.2 innings this season with San Antonio.

The St. Louis Cardinals just didn’t have a lot of answers on Friday as they fell to the Padres ot drop to 3-4 on the road this season. Randal Grichuk hit a home run and Stephen Piscotty and Yadier Molina had hits as the Cardinals scored just one one run on six hits. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright had another questionable start allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out two over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-3 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Cardinals start Michael Wacha who has allowed 21 hits and five earned runs while striking out 15 over 16.1 innings for a 1-0 record and a 2.76 ERA.
The Padres are 8-16 in their last 24 games, 5-9 in their last 14 home games, 2-6 at home against a right-handed starter, and 5-12 against a team with a winning record. St. Louis is 7-2 against the NL West, 1-8 in game two of a series, 3-9 in their last 12 road games, and 0-4 in Wacha’s last four road starts. St. Louis is 4-10 in their last 14 games in San Diego.
I don’t like the way the Cardinals are playing and I expect plenty of value on Vasquez and the Padres are my play here.
