The St. Louis Cardinals broke out the bats early and often yesterday and will look to do the same today against the Padres in San Diego.
The Cardinals continue their series at Petco Park on Sunday and will look for another outburst from their offense after hanging 11 on the Padres last night including a three run home run from Jeremy Hazelbaker who continues his unexpected pace to start the year. St. Louis always finds a way to stay competitive in the NL Central despite missing out on a handful of top end free agents this winter but with the pieces they have in place and a system that seems to have them atop the division year after year the Cards are once again in the mix this season. St. Louis is 8-2 in their last 10 contests against the NL West and are 9-4 in their last 13 games against a right handed starter and with Colin Rea getting the nod here for San Diego you’d have to think the Cards will have the edge with Mike Leake countering.

The Padres have had some pretty remarkable games this season, for better and for worse, as they have put up solid numbers in some games but have been dreadful in others and that includes last night as they were waxed by the Cards to the tune of an 11-1 final. San Diego doesn’t have a ton of expectation this season as they are projected to finish in the NL West basement but they do have some nice pieces in place and if they can get on the same page they could play spoiler to some of the league’s top teams come playoff time. However, they are outmatched here and while Leake isn’t great I think he is the better option and gets the Cards in a good position to grab the win.
