The Cincinnati Reds visit PNC Park to begin a weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Cincinnati Reds need a shift in momentum as soon as possible to prevent falling too far back in the National League Central. The Reds have dropped four in a row after a 5-2 road defeat at the hands of the Mets. Reds starter Jon Moscot was hurt by his defense with three runs plated but only one was earned on four hits and four free passes over five frames to fall to 0-2 with Blake Wood allowing two more in 2/3 of an inning to put the game out of reach. The bats mustered seven hits and a base on balls with Zack Cosart slamming a solo homer while Eduardo Suarez singled in Cosart. Daniel Straily draws Friday’s series opening start when the Cincinnati Reds visit PNC Park. Straily did not get a decision in a 13-5 versus the Cubs with three runs plated on four hits and three BB over 4.2 frames.

Pirates starter Jon Niese was charged with five runs on ten hits including a pair of homers through five frames with Neftali Fedliz giving up two runs in 1/3 of an inning. Pittsburgh hammered out 15 hits and walked four times with Gregory Polanco going deep and driving in two and scoring twice while David Freese, Francisco Cervelli and Jordy Mercer knocked in two runs apiece. The Pittsburgh Pirates are scheduled to start Juan Nicasio to the mound against Cincinnati Friday. Nicasio comes off of a 7-1 defeat at Arizona with two runs allowed on three hits and four walks in five innings.
