At Oriole Park on Thursday evening, the MLB is bringing us the series finale between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.
This will be game three of this set. In Tuesday’s opener, the Orioles gave the Yankees their sixth straight loss by a 4-1 margin. On Wednesday, the Yankees struck back in a big way, tallying a dominant 7-0 victory to halt their losing streak.

We’ll be seeing right-hander Masahiro Tanaka come out to the mound for the Yankees on Thursday. In his five starts and 31.1 innings thus far in 2016, Tanaka has accumulated a 2.87 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and a 28:6 K:BB ratio. On Friday against the Red Sox in his most recent appearance, Tanaka gave up two runs in 6.2 innings for a no-decision.
The veteran Yankees hitters haven’t been able to put a whole lot together lately, but there’s plenty of talent in the lineup. Starlin Castro leads the way on 27 hits with three homers and 12 RBI. Castro went 0-for-5 in Wednesday’s matchup, however. Alex Rodriguez has managed five homers and 12 RBI but carries a wimpy .194 BA. Unfortunately for New York, Rodriguez hit the 14-day DL (hamstring) just recently. As for Mark Teixeira, he’s got 19 hits, 13 runs and 11 RBI. Teixeira was 1-for-2 with two runs on Wednesday.
The Orioles will be giving Thursday’s start to right-hander Kevin Gausman. Although we’ve got just two starts to judge from, Gausman has been good overall with his 2.45 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 11 innings. When we last saw him Saturday against the White Sox, Gausman gave up three runs (two earned) in six innings for a no-decision.
The key names in the Baltimore batting order have been putting up some impressive numbers. Manny Machado has stormed out of the gate with seven homers, 16 RBI, 20 runs and 38 hits overall. Mark Trumbo is also swinging well with 34 hits, eight homers and 22 RBI. Chris Davis has had a few BA problems (.219), but has still put up 20 runs, seven homers and 17 RBI. Davis went 0-for-3 Wednesday.
The Yankees are 0-4 in their last four game threes of a series, but 5-0 in Tanaka’s last five Thursday starts. As for the Orioles, they’re 6-1 in their last seven Thursday games but 1-4 in Gausman’s last five starts overall.
This matchup seems like something of a coin-flip, as Tanaka and Gausman have both been playing well. I’ll give the slight edge to Baltimore, however, and I feel most comfortable with the under.
