Late Monday evening in early-week MLB action, we’ve got the opener of a series between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
The Yankees are fresh off a weekend set with the White Sox. New York and Chicago split the first two games, then on Sunday the Yankees posted a 7-5 victory despite getting out-hit 12-10.
As for the Diamondbacks, they just finished up a four-game set with the visiting Giants. Arizona dropped the first three games by two runs apiece, and on Sunday in the finale lost another tight one 2-1.

Taking the mound on Monday for the Yankees will be right-hander Michael Pineda. It’s been a pretty disappointing 2016 for Pineda, as he’s sporting a fat 6.28 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP over seven starts, a 1-4 record and 38.2 total innings. On Wednesday in his last start, Pineda put up six earned in 5.2 innings against the Royals for another loss.
The New York hitters are a pretty experienced--if altogether unreliable--bunch. Starlin Castro leads the way on 38 hits with 15 RBI. Carlos Beltran has put together 32 hits with 19 runs, eight homers and 18 RBI. Beltran blasted a 2-run, 2-out homer on Sunday. Didi Gregorius is even getting in on the action, with 15 RBI and 26 hits. Gregorius went 0-for-3 with a run in Sunday’s finale.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, we’ll be seeing left-hander Robbie Ray. Across his seven starts and 1-2 record this season, Ray has put up a 4.84 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP in 35.1 total innings. On Wednesday in his last appearance, Ray gave up five runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings for a no-decision against the Rockies.
The Arizona batting order is pretty deep when it comes to hitting talent. Jean Segura has been masterful this year on 54 hits with five homers and 19 RBI. Segura went 0-for-4 on Sunday. Yasmany Tomas has also been great on 37 hits with 22 runs, but came up empty on Sunday. Wellington Castillo has proven a great addition to the lineup on seven homers and 19 RBI. Castillo went 1-for-4 in Sunday’s game.
The Yankees are 1-7 in their last eight road games, and 6-1 in their last seven interleague games.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 4-1 in their last five Monday games and 1-4 in their last five interleague games.
The New York offense has been bringing a little extra punch lately, so I’m going to give the Yankees an edge here. The over might make sense as well in this one, given the sketchy pitching.
