Wednesday evening at PNC Park, this week’s series between the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates carries on.
This will be game three of a four-game set. On Monday in the opener, the Pirates jumped out to an early series lead with an 8-5 victory. In Tuesday’s marathon game, Pittsburgh started out with seven runs in the first inning, and would eventually carve out a 12-9 win. Both teams combined for a whopping 36 hits and four errors in that one.

For Wednesday’s game, the Braves will be giving us a look at right-hander Julio Teheran. Over his eight starts and tough-luck 0-4 record this season, Teheran has posted a respectable 3.17 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 48.1 innings. On Friday, Teheran gave up two runs (one earned) in seven innings against the Royals, but still had to take the loss.
There’s not much to write home about in the Atlanta batting order this year. Freddie Freeman is playing pretty well, though, with a team-high six home runs and 10 RBI with 38 hits. Freeman came up empty on Tuesday. Nick Markakis has contributed 22 RBI with 37 hits. Adonis Garcia has managed 27 hits with eight runs and eight RBI, but is currently sitting in Triple-A.
The Pirates will be rolling with left-hander Francisco Liriano in Wednesday’s matchup. In his seven starts and 3-2 record, Liriano has posted a 4.99 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP in 39.2 innings. On Friday in a loss against the Cubs, Liriano was torched for eight runs on nine hits and four walks in 4.2 innings.
Conversely, the Pirates batting order is pretty stacked. Starling Marte is crushing in 2016 with 47 hits and 21 runs. Marte is currently on the paternity list. Josh Harrison has knocked in 21 runs on 43 hits. Andrew McCutchen has a team-high eight home runs with 26 runs and 39 hits. McCutchen had a great day Tuesday, with three hits, two RBI and a run.
The Braves are just 1-5 in their last six Wednesday games, but 12-3 in Teheran’s last 15 starts against the National League Central.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 14-2 in Liriano’s last 16 home starts, and 22-4 in Liriano’s last 26 starts overall.
I think Teheran can keep this game close, but with that wimpy Braves offense I’m not sure that’ll help matters much. I feel like Pittsburgh will get the victory, but this might not be a bad spot to take the under, given the pitching matchup.
