Thursday evening at PNC Park, the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates will be finishing up their series.
This will be game four of the set this week. The Pirates took Monday’s opener 8-5 and Tuesday’s game two 12-9. On Wednesday, the Braves got a little revenge with a 3-2 victory.
USA TODAY Sports
For Thursday’s matchup, the Braves will be going with right-hander Micahael Foltynewicz. Over his three starts and 1-1 record thus far, Foltynewicz has posted a 2.89 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 18.2 total innings. Foltynewicz was great on Saturday in a 5-0 win against the Royals, tossing eight shutout innings.
The Atlanta batting order hasn’t exactly produced this season, but has shown flashes recently. Freddie Freeman heads the charge on 39 hits with 17 runs and six home runs. Nick Markakis is also playing pretty well with 38 hits and 22 RBI. Jeff Francoeur has managed 19 runs with 10 RBI and a .226 BA. Francoeur came up empty 0-for-4 on Wednesday.
Moving on over to the Pirates’ side, Jeff Locke will be making the Thursday start. Over his seven starts and 1-3 record this season, Locke has put up a 5.45 ERA with a 1.66 WHIP in 38 innings. On Saturday against the Cubs, Locke allowed six hits and six earned runs over 5.1 innings in a loss.
There’s a lot to like in the Pittsburgh lineup. Starling Marte has posted 47 hits with 21 runs, and Josh Harrison isn’t far behind him with 43 hits and 21 RBI. Harrison went 1-for-3 on Wednesday--Marte is on the paternity list. Andrew McCutchen leads the team on eight homers, and also has 26 runs with 18 RBI to his credit. McCutchen went 0-for-4 on Wednesday.
The Braves are 1-5 in their last six game fours of a series, and 1-5 in Foltynewicz’s last six starts.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 8-2 in their last 10 game fours of a series, and 4-1 in Locke’s last five starts during game four of a series.
Foltynewicz has been pitching well lately, but statistically it won’t last. I’ll take the Pirates once again for the win.
