PNC Park will be alive once again on Tuesday, as the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates get their series going.
The Diamondbacks are fresh off a weekend stint with the Cardinals. Arizona lost Saturday’s game, but won Friday and Sunday to take the series 2-1.
As for the Pirates, they just finished playing the Rockies. Pittsburgh and Colorado split the first two games, and in the rubber match Sunday, the Pirates took the series with a victory.

Arizona will be turning to right-hander Shelby Miller in the starting role on Tuesday. Over his nine starts and 1-5 record this year, Miller has been shaky on a 6.64 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP over 40.2 innings. On Wednesday in a loss to the Yankees, Miller gave up three runs and 10 hits in 5.2 innings.
The Diamondbacks have a pretty well-rounded crew of hitters at their disposal. Jean Segura leads the team with a whopping 61 hits, 25 runs, 23 RBI and a .321 average. Brandon Drury has played well also with 45 hits, seven homers and 16 runs. Paul Goldschmidt holds a team-high eight home runs with 26 RBI, but has also struck out a team-high 49 times. Goldschmidt has also walked more than twice as many times as the other players on the team, with 43 free passes.
The Pirates will be turning to left-hander Francisco Liriano for Tuesday’s game. In an up-and-down season, Liriano has put up eight start with a 3-3 record for a 4.63 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 46.2 innings. On Wednesday against Atlanta, Liriano lost the game despite a quality start on two runs in seven innings.
The Pittsburgh batting order is a pretty deep crew as well. Starling Marte holds 52 hits with 23 runs and 16 RBI. Josh Harrison isn’t far off with 48 hits and 23 RBI. Harrison bagged two hits, two RBI and a run on Monday. Gregory Polanco has 47 hits with 31 runs, five homers and 23 RBI.
The Diamondbacks are 4-1 in their last five game ones of a series, and 8-2 in their last 10 Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 8-1 in Liriano’s last nine starts against the National League West, and 14-2 in Liriano’s last 16 home starts overall.
I don’t trust Miller at all here, so I’ll take the Pirates for the victory. Liriano should be able to pitch well enough to get the job done.
