Over at PNC Park on Thursday, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates will be wrapping up their series.
This will be game three of the set. In Tuesday’s game one, the Pirates took a dominant 12-1 victory. As for Wednesday’s matchup, Pittsburgh got another victory, but this one was much closer at 5-4. Arizona had the winning run at the plate but couldn’t get anything going.

For Thursday’s game, the Diamondbacks will be bringing out left-hander Patrick Corbin. Over his nine starts and 2-3 record this season, Corbin has put up a 3.99 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP in 56.1 innings. During his last start, Corbin got a win in St. Louis on two earned over 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts.
Arizona holds a pretty well-stocked batting order. Jean Segura leads the team on 61 hits with 25 runs and 23 RBI. Brandon Drury has seven homers and 46 hits with 16 runs this season. As for Paul Goldschmidt, he’s put up eight homers with 26 RBI and 24 runs. Goldschmidt went 0-for-4 in Wednesday’s game to move his average to .241 on the year.
Over on the Pirates’ side, we’ll be getting a look at right-hander Gerrit Cole in Thursday’s game. Over his eight starts and 5-3 record, Cole holds a 2.79 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP in 48.1 total innings. On Friday, Cole gave up 10 hits against the Rockies but it only cost him one run in seven innings.
Pittsburgh has some notable hitters on their roster as well. Starling Marte has a team-high 54 hits with 24 runs to his credit for a .318 BA. Josh Harrison has hit safely 50 times with 19 runs and 23 RBI. Harrison was out of Wednesday’s game with an illness, however. Andrew McCutchen has 46 hits, 30 runs and eight homers in 2016. McCutchen snagged two hits and a run on Wednesday.
The Diamondbacks are just 2-7 in their last nine game threes of a series, but 5-1 in Corbin’s last six Thursday starts.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 20-6 in Cole’s last 26 starts in game three of a series, and 7-1 in Cole’s last eight Thursday starts.
I like both Corbin and Cole in this matchup, and they should be able to rein in the offenses. I’ll take the Pirates for a slim victory.
