On Friday in MLB action from historic Wrigley Field, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs will start up their weekend series.
The Phillies played a three-game set against the Tigers in Detroit this week. Philadelphia lost the first two games, but pulled out an 8-5 victory on Wednesday to prevent the sweep.
Meanwhile, the Cubs just finished up a set against their archrival Cardinals. Chicago dropped the opener, blew out St. Louis in the second game, and eked out a 9-8 win in the finale.

Philadelphia will be giving us another look at left-hander Adam Morgan in Friday’s game. In his five starts and 1-2 record this season, Morgan has a 5.61 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP over 25.2 innings. On Saturday, Morgan put up two runs in six innings in a loss to Atlanta.
The Phillies order has a handful of bright spots among the mediocrity. Odubel Herrera has been great on 54 hits with 27 runs and a nice .327 BA. Maikel Franco has 45 hits to his credit with eight homers and 26 RBI. Freddy Galvis isn’t too far back with 42 hits, 18 runs, a pair of triples and 17 RBI.
The Cubs will be giving us a left-hander as well for Friday’s game, and that’s Jon Lester. In his nine starts and 4-3 record this season, Lester holds a 2.60 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP in 55.1 innings. On Saturday’s start, Lester put up five runs on six hits in just 2.2 innings before getting yanked.
Everyone’s talking about the Cubs batting order this year. Ben Zobrist leads things off with 54 hits, 31 RBI and 34 runs. Dexter Fowler has also played very well with 53 hits, 32 runs and 23 RBI. Anthony Rizzo holds a team-high 11 home runs with 29 runs and 35 RBI, but his .234 BA needs a little attention.
The Phillies are 11-2 in their last 13 against teams with winning records, but 0-4 in Morgan’s last four starts against the National League Central.
As for the Cubs, they’re 5-0 in their last five Friday games, and 20-6 in their last 26 game ones of a series.
I don’t think I’ve picked against the Cubs yet this year, and I’m not about to start now. Lester should be able to bounce back here, and we should see some solid offense from a well-rested Chicago club.
