Kicking off the weekend MLB action at Citi Field on Friday, we’ve got the series opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets.
The Dodgers are coming off a three-game series against the Reds this week. Los Angeles swept all of those games by a combined five runs and has now won four in a row after losing four straight.
As for the Mets, they played the Nationals this week. New York won games one and three, but dropped Tuesday’s matchup 7-4.

The Dodgers were originally going to start left-hander Alex Wood for the Friday game, but he was scratched due to tightness in his triceps. Instead, L.A. will call up top prospect Julio Urias (in his major league debut) to fill in. With any luck, Wood will be able to jump back into the lineup for Monday against the Cubs.
Los Angeles is stuffed with talent at the top end of their order. Corey Seager has been something of a surprise with 49 hits, 12 doubles, seven homers and 23 RBI. Alex Gonzalez is also hitting well with 45 hits, 16 runs and 22 RBI. Joc Pederson has proven himself to be the team’s power man right now on eight homers and 24 RBI with 22 runs.
The Mets will be whipping out the big guns with right-hander Jacob deGrom starting Friday’s game. Over his seven starts and 3-1 record, deGrom has a 3.07 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP in 41 innings. When we last saw him, deGrom put up four runs in five innings against the Brewers in a no-decision.
There’s some noteworthy talent in the New York batting order as well. Asdrubal Cabrera (who has been battling back spasms) has 47 hits to lead the team. Yoenis Cespedes isn’t far back with 46 hits, 30 runs and 36 RBI with 15 homers. Neil Walker has 11 homers with 21 RBI and 20 runs to his credit, sporting a .269 BA.
The Dodgers are 1-4 in their last five road games, and 1-4 in their last five Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 5-1 in their last six overall, and 10-2 in their last 12 Friday games.
It will be interesting to see Urias here, but I’ve got to go with deGrom and the Mets for the opener of this series.
