Over at Angel Stadium on Monday, the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels will be kicking off their early-week series.
The Tigers just finished up a road series against the Athletics. The teams split the first two games, and on Sunday in the finale Detroit lost the game and the series 4-2.
Meanwhile, the Angels tangled with the Astros this weekend, also splitting the first two games. On Sunday, Houston snagged a closely-contested 13-inning victory 8-6.

For Monday’s game, the Tigers will be going with right-hander Justin Verlander. In his 10 starts and 4-4 record this season, Verlander has put up a 4.02 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP in 65 innings. Punching out 10 batters in eight shutout frames Tuesday, Verlander was great in a win against the Phillies.
The Tigers have a very powerful attack on offense at the top of their order. Ian Kinsler has been smoking on 61 hits with 10 homers and 42 runs. Nick Castellanos has 10 homers with 32 RBI and 24 runs. Miguel Cabrera holds 56 hits with 31 RBI and 11 homers. Cabrera went 0-for-4 on Sunday, though.
In Monday’s game, the Angels will be whipping out right-hander Joulys Chacin. In his eight starts and 1-3 record, Chacin has posted a 5.11 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP in 44 innings. In his last appearance Tuesday against the Rangers, Chacin posted three runs in six innings for a loss.
The Angels attack has been up and down at the plate this year. Yunel Escobar has been solid with 59 hits and 22 runs. Mike Trout has also played well with 59 hits, 35 runs and 37 RBI. Kole Calhoun has 54 hits with 29 runs and 24 RBI to his credit.
The Tigers are 1-4 in their last five against the American League West, and 2-6 in their last eight against a left-handed starter.
As for the Angels, they’re 5-1 in their last six Monday games and 4-1 in their last five game ones of a series.
I can’t trust Santiago for much of anything these days, and Verlander seems to have found his groove. I’ll take the Tigers to open the series with a victory.
