Early Monday evening at Rogers Centre, the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays will be kicking off their series.
The Yankees are coming off a three-game set with the Rays. The two teams split the first two matchups, and in Sunday’s finale, New York scored twice in the seventh to eke out a 2-1 win.
As for the Blue Jays, they tangled with the Red Sox this weekend. Toronto took games one and two, and on Sunday, Boston stormed back for a 5-3 victory.
USA TODAY Sports
New York is set to be rolling with right-hander Ivan Nova on Monday. In his 10 starts and 3-2 record this year, Nova has posted a 3.65 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP in 37 innings. On Wednesday, Nova gave up four earned runs in 6.2 innings.
The veteran Yankees lineup is still pretty effective these days. Carlos Beltran has been solid so far with 46 hits, 26 runs, 12 homers and 31 RBI. Beltran’s currently hurt (shoulder) and is going to try to come back for the Monday game. Starlin Castro is also putting up decent numbers with 47 hits and 21 RBI. Castro had both RBI on Sunday. Jacoby Ellsbury has come on lately to the tune of 43 hits, 19 runs and 15 RBI.
Over on the Blue Jays’ side, we’ll be seeing right-hander Marco Estrada in the starting role. In his nine starts and 2-2 record this year, Estrada has put up a 2.76 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP in 58.2 innings total. On Wednesday against these same Yankees, Estrada got the win with three runs in seven innings.
Everyone knows the Toronto lineup. Josh Donaldson heads the charge with a team-high 13 homers among his 50 hits with 39 runs. Michael Saunders is right there as well on 49 hits with 25 runs and 17 RBI. Edwin Encarnacion holds 48 hits with 21 runs and 38 RBI. Encarnacion bagged a solo homer on Sunday.
The Yankees are 5-2 in their last seven game ones of a series, and 0-5 in Nova’s last five starts against the American League East.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are 5-2 in their last seven game ones of a series and 7-3 in their last 10 Monday games.
I have to stick with Estrada and the Blue Jays here, although it many end up being a rather close game.
