The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers clash at Comerica Park in their series opener.
The New York Yankees have struggled for consistent scoring and that has hurt them in the win column. Scoring and pitching were both issues Wednesday in a 7-0 defeat at Toronto. Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka was a hard luck loser with two runs allowed (one earned) over six frames before things got out of reach when Kirby Yates gave up four runs in 1/3 of an inning. The Yanks logged seven hits and walked twice with Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran posting two hits apiece. Michael Pineda gets the start in game one at the Tigers on Thursday night. Pineda comes off a 9-5 loss at Tampa Bay with six runs scored on nine hits over 3.2 innings of work.

Matt Boyd toes the rubber for his second start of the season and first career start versus the Yankees. Boyd gave up three runs on six hits including a pair of homers in five frames of a 12-3 loss at Oakland (ND).
