The Pittsburgh Pirates end their series with the Miami Marlins with a Thursday night tilt.
The Pittsburgh Pirates need to go on a big run and hope the Cubs go cold to take over the NL Central. The Pirates were strong in the pitching department but not so much at the plate in a 3-2 defeat at Miami on Wednesday night. Pitt starter Jonathan Niese allowed two runs on six hits and three free passes over five frames with Tony Watson giving up the game winner in the 8th. The Buccos mustered four hits and walked six times with pinch hitter Matt Joyce singling in Francisco Cervelli and Josh Harrison. The Pirates hand the ball to Juan Nicasio for the final game of the series with the Marlins. Nicasio has not logged a quality start the past four times out with 15 runs plated over 20 innings.

The Miami Marlins have been playing right around .500 baseball the last few weeks but need to do better to move up in the NL East standings. The Marlins took a step in the right direction Wednesday night with great pitching against a strong offense like the Pirates. Fish starter Adam Conley tossed six scoreless innings but did not get a decision when Kyle Barraclough giving up both runs in the 7th. Miami mustered seven hits and walked three times with Adeiny Hechavarria and Christian Yelich driving in runs. Left hander Wei-Yin Chen is slated to be on the mound for the Marlins on Thursday. Chen threw the ball well in a 7-2 loss at Atlanta last time out with a run allowed on two hits in five frames.
Pittsburgh are 11-5 in their last 16 overall and are 11-5 in their last 16 games on grass while the over is 30-14-1 in their last 45 overall. The under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings and the Pirates are 19-7 in the last 26 meetings. I have to be honest and say my feel for this one isn’t good and I’ll go over for now…
