Over at PNC Park on Friday, the MLB is bringing us series-opening action between the Los Angeles Angels and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Angels are fresh off a three-game series against the Tigers this week. L.A. won the first two games but dropped Wednesday’s finale 3-0.
As for the Pirates, they just finished up a set against the Marlins. Pittsburgh won the opener in a blowout 10-0 but lost close ones Tuesday and Wednesday. In the Thursday finale, Pittsburgh lost a 12-inning marathon in walk-off fashion 4-3.

In Friday’s game the, Angels will be bringing out right-hander Jered Weaver. Over his 10 starts and 4-4 record this year, Weaver has posted a 5.40 ERA with a 1.51 WHIP in 58.1 innings. On Saturday, Weaver put up four runs in six innings for a loss to the Astros.
The Los Angeles lineup is stuffed with talent, especially on the top end. Mike Trout leads the charge with 61 hits, 38 runs, 12 homers and 40 RBI. Yunel Escobar has 59 hits with 22 runs and 13 RBI. Albert Pujols is hitting a tepid .230, but also has 11 homers for 36 RBI and 23 runs.
Over on the Pirates’ side, we’ll be seeing left-hander Francisco Liriano in the starting role. In his 10 starts and 4-4 record this season, Liriano has put up a 4.63 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP in 58.1 innings. On Sunday when we last saw him, Liriano put up five earned in six innings in a loss to the Rangers.
The Pittsburgh lineup is one of the most potent in the league this year. Starling Marte leads the way with 63 hits, 27 runs and 19 RBI. Marte was 0-for-5 on Thursday. Gregory Polanco is close behind with 58 hits, 38 runs and 36 RBI. Andrew McCutchen has been strong with 53 hits, 34 runs, nine homers and 23 RBI. McCutchen went 0-for-3 on Thursday to drop his BA to .254.
The Angels are 5-1 in their last six game ones of a series, and 2-6 in their last eight Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 5-0 in their last five game ones of a series, and 15-2 in Liriano’s last 17 home starts.
I’m giving a slight advantage to the Pirates here, but I’m not thrilled about Weaver or Liriano. The over seems a prudent play as well.
