Coming up in MLB action from Yankee Stadium on Thursday, we’ve got series-ending action between the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees.
This will be the last of a four-game set. New York took games one and two by a combined six runs, and on Wednesday the Yankees scored eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings on the way to a 12-6 victory. There were a combined 31 hits in that one.

For Thursday’s game, the Angels will be whipping out right-hander Jhoulys Chacin. In his 10 starts and 2-3 record this year, Chacin has produced a 4.50 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP over 58 total innings. On Saturday, Chacin went five innings against the Pirates, allowing six hits and three earned in a no-decision.
The top end of the Angels batting order is pretty stacked in terms of talent. Yunel Escobar holds 68 hits with 26 runs and 17 RBI. Kole Calhoun is right there alongside with 65 hits, 39 runs and 32 RBI. Mike Trout is also playing well with 67 hits, 41 runs, 13 homers and 43 RBI. Trout blasted a homer and finished 3-for-5 on Wednesday.
The Yankees will be countering with right-hander Ivan Nova in the starting role Thursday. Over his 12 games (six starts) and 4-3 record this season, Nova has put up a 4.41 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP in 49 innings of work. On Saturday against the Orioles, Nova got a win despite five runs on seven hits.
The veteran New York lineup is filled with familiar faces. Carlos Beltran has 59 hits with 34 runs, a team-high 16 homers and 40 RBI. Beltran smacked a two-run homer on Wednesday. Starlin Castro has faded a bit as of late, but still has 57 hits with 19 runs and 25 RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury has 55 hits with 25 runs and 19 RBI in 2016. Ellsbury had a homer, two hits and three runs on Wednesday.
The Angels are 5-2 in their last seven Thursday games, and 17-7 in their last 24 game fours of a series. Los Angeles is also 2-6 in their last eight road games and 1-11 in their last 12 against the American League East.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 38-15 in their last 53 game fours of a series, and 29-14 in their last 43 Thursday games. New York is also 2-5 in Nova’s last seven starts against a team with a losing record, and 2-8 in Nova’s last 10 Thursday starts.
I’m not thrilled about either team here, but I’ll give a slight edge to Nova and the Yankees. We could see the over come in as well.
