On Friday evening, the MLB is bringing us another matchup between the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays from Rogers Centre.
This will be game two of the four-game weekend set. In Thursday’s opener, the Orioles scored a run in the top of the ninth to eke out a 6-5 win.
USA TODAY Sports
For the Friday game, the Orioles will be bringing out right-hander Kevin Gausman. In his nine starts and 0-3 record this year, Gausman has managed a 3.52 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP in 53.2 innings. Gausman was pretty solid in Sunday’s game, allowing one run on seven hits in six innings to the Yankees for a no-decision.
Throw a dart at the top end of the Baltimore lineup and you’ll likely hit a potential all-star. Manny Machado heads the charge on 72 hits with 15 homers, 38 RBI and 41 runs. Mark Trumbo is right there as well with a team-high 20 homers, 48 RBI, 69 hits and 38 runs. Jonathan Schoop is having a pretty good year as well with 55 hits, 23 runs and 32 RBI. Schoop went 1-for-3 on Thursday.
The Blue Jays will be countering with right-hander Marco Estrada in Friday’s game. In his 11 games with a 4-2 record, Estrada has produced a 2.41 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP in 74.2 innings. Sunday against the Red Sox, Estrada recorded a win with two hits and two runs in eight innings of work.
The Toronto batting order is capable of going off for a slew of runs at any moment. Josh Donaldson has 57 hits with 47 runs, 14 homers and 34 RBI. Donaldson bagged a triple on Thursday. Kevin Pillar has 57 hits with 22 runs and 21 RBI. Edwin Encarnacion has had his bumps in the road this season, but is still sitting on 12 homers, 47 RBI, 55 hits and 26 runs.
The Orioles are 5-0 in their last five Friday games, and 1-4 in their last five game twos of a series. Baltimore is also 0-4 in Gausman’s last four Friday starts and 4-12 in Gausman’s last 16 road starts.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are 6-0 in their last six Friday games, and 4-0 in Estrada’s last four starts. Toronto is also 9-4 in Estrada’s last 13 home starts and 1-4 in Estrada’s last five Friday starts.
I’ll give a slight edge to the Orioles based on offense, but this should be a low-scoring affair with Estrada and Gausman on the mound. Give me the under.
