Yankee Stadium will be alive once again on Saturday, as the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees continue their weekend series.
This will be the second game of the set. In Friday’s opener, the Yankees scored three times in the first inning on the way to a 4-0 shutout victory.

For Saturday’s matchup, the Tigers will bring out right-hander Justin Verlander. In his 12 games and 5-5 record this year, Verlander has put up a 3.97 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP in 79.1 innings. On Sunday against the White Sox, Verlander managed eight strikeouts with two runs in seven innings.
At the plate, the Tigers boast a pretty solid and well-rounded group. Ian Kinsler leads the charge on 50 runs with 75 hits, 11 homers and 35 RBI. Victor Martinez has managed 24 runs, 71 hits and 34 RBI. Miguel Cabrera has 68 hits with 32 runs, 12 homers and 36 RBI to his credit. Cabrera came up empty 0-for-4 on Friday.
As for the Yankees, we’ll be seeing right-hander Masahiro Tanaka on Saturday. Across 12 starts and a 3-1 record this year, Tanaka has put up a 2.76 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP in 78.1 innings of work total. On Monday against the Angels, Tanaka put up two runs in seven innings but had to take a no-decision.
The New York lineup is pretty full of veterans and has played fairly well on the whole. Carlos Beltran has 62 hits thus far with 35 runs, 16 homers and 44 RBI. Beltran baggedt two hits, a run and an RBI on Friday. Starlin Castro has had a few ups and downs recently but is still sitting on 59 hits with 19 runs and 25 RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury has put up 56 hits with 26 runs and 19 RBI.
The Tigers are 5-2 in their last seven game twos of a series, and 3-13 in Verlander’s last 16 starts against the American League East. Detroit is also 1-5 in their last six road games and 5-2 in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 4-1 in their last five Saturday games, and 5-1 in Tanaka’s last six starts. New York is also 5-0 in Tanaka’s last five Saturday starts, but 1-5 in Tanaka’s last six starts against a team with a winning record.
I like both pitchers here, but I’ll give a slight edge to Tanaka and the Yankees. I also like the under to come in for this one.
