Coming up on Sunday from Tropicana Field, we’ve got another MLB installment from the Houston Astros and the Tampa Bay Rays.
This will be the third and final game of the weekend set. In Friday’s opener, the Rays took a slim 4-3 victory. On Saturday, the Astros scored in the top of the ninth to eventually secure a 4-3 win of their own.
USA TODAY Sports
For Sunday’s game, the Astros will be rolling with left-hander Dallas Keuchel. Over 13 starts and a 3-8 record, Keuchel has provided a 5.44 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP in 82.2 innings of work. On Tuesday when we last saw him, Keuchel gave up four runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings against the Rangers.
There’s a lot to like about the talented Astros batting order. Jose Altuve leads the way on 86 hits with 46 runs, 10 homers and 38 RBI. George Springer is playing great as well with 72 hits, 43 runs, 14 homers and 37 RBI. Carlos Correa is getting in on the action with 60 hits, 28 runs and 32 RBI of his own. Correa is currently getting over an ankle sprain, however.
The Rays will be countering with lefty Matt Moore on Sunday. In his 12 starts and 2-4 record, Moore has put up a 5.56 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP in 69.2 innings total. On Tuesday, Moore gave up five runs on seven hits in seven innings to the Diamondbacks.
Tampa Bay also has a pretty solid group of hitters at their disposal. Evan Longoria is atop the heap with 65 hits, 36 runs, 15 homers and 36 RBI. Steven Souza is playing well on 52 hits, 26 runs and 25 RBI. Steve Pearce is also making his presence felt with 54 hits, 20 runs and 23 RBI. Pearce went 3-for-4 on Saturday.
The Astros are 5-0 in their last five game threes of a series, and 5-13 in their last 18 games against a left-handed starter. Houston is also 2-5 in Keuchel’s last seven road starts and 2-8 in Keuchel’s last 10 starts overall.
As for the Rays, they’re 5-2 in Moore’s last seven Sunday starts, and 1-8 in Moore’s last nine starts overall. Tampa Bay is also 6-2 in their last eight overall and 2-6 in their last eight against the American League West.
The pitching matchup here could lead to a lot of long-balls, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the over come in. I’ll also give a slight edge to the Astros as far as getting the win.
