Kauffman Stadium will be alive and rocking once again on Monday evening, as the Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Royals are set to open their MLB series.
The Indians just finished up a weekend series against the Angels. Cleveland and LA each won a game Friday and Saturday, and in Sunday’s finale, the Indians managed an 8-3 win to take the series.
Over on the Royals’ side, KC is fresh off a series against the White Sox. Those two teams also split their first two games, and on Sunday Kansas City scored twice in the first pair of innings on the way to a 3-1 win.

The Indians will be bringing out right-hander Carlos Carrasco for Monday’s game. In his six starts and 2-1 record this year, Carrasco has managed a 3.48 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP in 33.2 total innings. On Wednesday in a loss to the Mariners, Carrasco gave up four runs in 6.2 innings.
The Cleveland batting order doesn’t get a lot of press, but there’s some real talent here. Francisco Lindor leads the team with 73 hits, 40 runs and 33 RBI. Lindor had three hits, three RBI and two runs on Sunday. Jason Kipnis is also doing well on 64 hits with 32 runs and 31 RBI. As for Mike Napoli, he leads the team with 14 homers and 45 RBI alongside 54 hits and 40 runs.
The Royals will be countering with right-hander Edinson Volquez on Monday. In his 13 games and 5-6 record over 78.1 innings this year, Vlolquez owns a 4.25 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. On Wednesday, Volquez also suffered a loss, this one on four hits and four runs in 4.2 innings against the Orioles.
The Kansas City lineup hasn’t quite been as powerful as some had hoped at the beginning of the year. Eric Hosmer is out from on 73 hits with 32 runs, 12 homers and 38 RBI. Lorenzo Cain has 66 hits with 30 runs and 34 RBI. Alcides Escobar is also playing fairly well with 65 hits, 21 runs and 16 RBI.
The Indians are 25-12 in their last 37 game ones of a series, and 9-22 in their last 31 Monday games. Cleveland is also 6-0 in Carrasco’s last six starts during game one of a series, and 5-1 in Carrasco’s last six starts overall.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 3-9 in their last 12 Monday games, and 9-3 in Volquez’s last 12 starts in game one of a series. Kansas City is also 1-5 in Volquez’s last six starts against a team with a winning record, and 17-5 in Volquez’s last 22 home starts.
I like Carrasco a little more than Volquez right now, so I’ll take the Indians for the win. This game could get ugly, though.
