The Washington Nations travel to the west coast to open a series with the San Diego Padres.
The Washington Nationals are trying to pull away from the rest of the National League East and have been doing just that. The surging Nationals defeated the Cubs 5-4 in 12 innings Wednesday and have won eight of eleven. Nats starter Stephen Strasburg gave up a solo homer on six hits over seven frames before Yusmeiro Petit allowed a 12th inning but Washington scored twice in the bottom of the inning to steal one. The Nationals managed nine hits and walked four times with Stephen Drew smacking a solo bomb while Michael Taylor drove in a run and scored. The Nationals kick off the series at San Diego with Tanner Roark on the mound. Roark is coming off of an 8-0 victory versus Philadelphia with six hits allowed over seven innings.

The San Diego Padres have been heading in the wrong direction lately and need to turn things around to save their season. Things turned around Wednesday in a 6-3 victory versus visiting Miami that snapped the Padres four game slide. SD starter Luis Perdomo allowed all three runs on six hits and a pair of BB through six innings to even his record at 2-2. San Diego pounded out 13 hits with Melvin Upton Jr. going 3-4 with a homer, two RBI’s and a pair of runs while Derek Norris knocked in two runs and scored. San Diego sends Erik Johnson to the hill for his first career match up with the Nationals. Johnson has struggled his last three times out with 14 runs plated on 23 hits and eight BB including seven homers in 16.1 frames.
The over is 8-3-1 in Washington’s last 12 overall and the over is 8-3-1 in their last 12 on grass while the Nationals are 10-4 in their last 14 road games. I’m just going with the hotter squad and nothing more…
