The Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays conclude their series on Thursday.
The Seattle Mariners have been holding on to second in the American League West even though they have been struggling. The Mariners continue to search for answers following Wednesday’s 3-2, 13 inning defeat at Tropicana Field. The bats struggled but the arms didn’t with M’s starter Nathan Karns allowing both runs over five frames before Mike Montgomery gave up the winner in the 12th. Seattle totaled eight hits and walked four times with Nelson Cruz smacking a two run homer. Left hander James Paxton gets Thursday’s start at Tropicana Field versus Tampa Bay. Paxton did not receive a decision in a 2-1 loss to Texas with 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Tampa Bay Rays are trying to make a push in the American League East and their generally passive bats have been leading the way. The surging Rays kept pace in the division with Wednesday’s victory that was secured by great work on the mound. TB starter Drew Smyly gave up a two run bomb through 6.2 innings while striking out 12 Mariners while four relievers put up zeros. Tampa Bay Logged eight hits and walked eleven times with Corey Dickerson knocking in two with Logan Morrison knocking in one. Rookie left hander Blake Snell makes his second career start against the Mariners. Snell did not get a decision in a 3-2 loss at the Yankees where he gave up a run on two hits in five frames.
Seattle are 6-2 in their last 8 games on astroturf and are 2-8 in Paxton’s last 10 road starts. Tampa Bay are 8-2 in their last 10 overall and the under is 20-8-1 in their last 29 home games while the over is 21-10-2 in the Rays last 33 overall. The Mariners are 10-4 in the last 14 meetings. It’s tough betting a game a rookie pitches in because they have no track record but I’ll back him…
