The Atlanta Braves look to extend the misery of one of their arch rivals as they host the New York Mets at Turner Field on Friday.
The Mets’ woeful month of June continued with a road loss to the lowly Atlanta Braves on Thursday night and they will look to avoid another disappointing effort on Friday as they send Steven Matz to the bump looking for a turn around victory. New York is months removed from qualifying for the World Series and came into this season with a ton of expectations thanks to their spectacular rotation and handful of pop at the plate. However, New York has stumbled of late and have given the division to the Washington Nationals at the moment and if they can’t find a way out of this funk they could very well miss out on the playoffs altogether.

The Braves meanwhile have had a woeful start to the season but they aren’t expected to do much this season as they don’t have a ton of weapons beyond Freddie Freeman and really don’t have an ace to their staff with the exception of maybe Julio Teheran. Atlanta will have to wait for their turn to get back into the playoff picture as they are in the midst of a full rebuild and will need to build their way back through the draft and through trades but without a ton of trade chips their return may not be as advertised and will need to go out and recruit some free agents in the offseason. As for tonight though they have some momentum after a win yesterday against the Mets and there is no reason to think they can’t stay competitive here once again.
New York is 0-4 in their lasy four against the NL East, 13-3 in their last 16 Friday games, and 7-2 in Matz’ last nine road starts while the Braves are 38-78 in their last 116 overall, 18-42 in their last 60 home games, and are 4-1 in their last five Friday games. New York is the better team on paper and you have to think they can get out of this funk and perhaps it is Matz to get them out of it.
