Early Monday evening in MLB action from Turner Field, we’ve got the opener of a series between the Cleveland Indians and the Atlanta Braves.
The Indians are coming off a series against the Tigers. Cleveland won the first two games by a combined 13-5 score, and in the Sunday finale, the Indians won 9-3 for the sweep.
As for the Braves, they just finished up against the Mets. Atlanta won Thursday’s game but dropped the next two. In the finale, the Braves took a victory 5-2.

For Monday’s game, the Indians will be bringing out right hander Trevor Bauer. In his 17 games (11 starts), Bauer has posted a 5-2 record with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 84.1 innings. In his last starts against the Rays, Bauer posted a complete-game victory with three hits and one run.
At the plate, the Indians have some very intriguing hitters. Francisco Lindor is sitting on 88 hits with 49 runs, 10 homers and 39 RBI. Lindor bagged three hits and two runs on Sunday. Jason Kipnis has 76 hits with 36 runs and 41 RBI. Kipnis is currently getting over an illness. Carlos Santana has 64 hits with 42 runs, 16 homers and 40 RBI.
Meanwhile, the Braves will be starting right-hander John Gant on Monday. In his 10 games (three starts), Gant has managed a 1-2 record with a 4.45 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 28.1 innings. In his last start against Miami, Gant gave up seven hits and three runs in 5.2 innings for a loss.
The Atlanta hitters are pretty top-heavy overall. Freddie Freeman leads the charge on 79 hits with 36 runs, 13 homers and 28 RBI. Freeman blasted a homer on Sunday. Nick Markakis has 72 hits with 29 runs and 40 RBI. Adonis Garcia is next up with 49 hits, 19 runs and 21 RBI to his credit this year. Garcia hit a solo homer with three RBI on Sunday.
The Indians are 6-1 in their last seven game ones of a series, and 4-0 in their last four interleague games. Cleveland is also 10-23 in their last 33 Monday games, and 0-4 in their last four against the National League East.
As for the Braves, they’re 4-1 in their last five game ones of a series, and 8-22 in their last 30 interleague games. Atlanta is also 1-8 in their last nine Monday games, and 0-4 in their last four interleague home games.
I’d be silly to pick against the red-hot Indians right now. I’ll take Cleveland for the victory in the opener.
