The St. Louis Cardinals look to build on their 8-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night as the teams meet up again on Wednesday as the series shifts to Busch Stadium.
The Royals look to rebound after a tough loss at home last night as they take to the road for another in-state, interleague show down with the St. Louis Cardinals and will look to retain Missouri baseball bragging rights. Kansas City has been on the ascent over the last few weeks but took one on the chin last night and while they threatened in the ninth inning to make a game of it they couldn’t muster enough to complete the come back and fell by four runs in the end. KC will turn to Edinson Volquez in this one as he will face off against Carlos Martinez who has been having a very nice season and is quickly becoming the ace of the staff as he is 7-5 with a 3.02 ERA. Volquez meanwhile is 7-7 with a 5.24 mark and while he is having a disappointing season he remains an integral part of the KC rotation and in a one game show down he can certainly be counted on to lead his team to victory.

The Cardinals meanwhile are coming off a nice win last night and will continue their trek towards a potential wild card spot as it looks like the Cubs are well clear in the divisional race and will force the Cards into second place at best. St. Louis has a very nice roster still in place but they are a shadow of where they have been in years past and aside from Martinez and Adam Wainwright they don’t have a great rotation and that could end up costing them in the path to a potential playoff spot. With that being said, the Cards need to improve their interleague play as they have been woeful against the American League of late and while they did get a win yesterday and return home here without the use of a DH they are in tough against a heavy hitting Royals side.
Kansas City is 1-4 in Volquez’ last five road starts, 36-17 in their last 53 interleague games against a righty, and 9-1 in Volquez’ last 10 interleague starts while the Cards are 5-1 in their last six during game three of a series, 7-3 in their last 10 Wednesday games, and 0-5 in their last five interleague home games. The Royals are in tough on the road here as the Cards have the edge on the bump and will be more comfortable back at home with an American League pitcher having to bat.
