Coming up Thursday from Turner Field, the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves will be kicking off their MLB series.
The Marlins just finished up against the Tigers. Miami dropped Tuesday’s game, and on Wednesday the Marlins were blown out 10-3.
As for the Braves, they’re coming off a series against the Indians. Atlanta lost the first two games, and in Wednesday’s matchup they made it a sweep with a 3-0 loss.

Lefty Wei-Yin Chen will be making the start for Miami on Thursday. In his 15 starts and 5-2 record in 2016, Chen has put together a 5.00 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP in 86.1 innings overall. Last Thursday against the Cubs, Chen went seven innings with five hits and two runs in a no-decision.
Miami has a nice assortment of key players in their batting order. Marcel Ozuna has put up 90 hits with 48 runs, 16 homers and 44 RBI. Martin Prado is sitting on 92 hits, 34 runs and 27 RBI. Prado bagged four hits and a run on Wednesday. Christian Yelich holds 82 hits with 36 runs and 38 RBI so far.
RHP Mike Foltynewicz will be getting the start for the Braves on Thursday. It’s been one month exactly since we’ve seen Foltynewicz on the mound, as he’s coming off the disabled list due to an elbow injury. Over six starts and a 2-2 record this year, Foltynewicz holds a 3.51 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP over 33.1 innings total.
It’s not hard to find the big swingers on the Braves’ batting order. Freddie Freeman has been the star this year with 82 hits, 36 runs, 13 homers and 28 RBI. Nick Markakis has 74 hits with 29 runs and 41 RBI. Adonis Garcia is playing fairly well with his 50 hits, 19 runs and 21 RBI this year. Garcia and Freeman combined to go 0-for-8 on Wednesday.
The Marlins are 10-1 in their last 11 Thursday games, and 5-0 in Chen’s last five starts in game one of a series. Miami is also 1-4 in Chen’s last five starts against the National League East, and 5-2 in Chen’s last seven starts versus a team with a losing record.
As for the Braves, they’re 16-35 in their last 51 Thursday games, and 20-47 in their last 67 home games. Atlanta is also 15-37 in their last 52 games against a left-handed starter, and 40-83 in their last 123 games overall.
I think Chen can take care of business here, so I’ll go with the Marlins for the victory. It will be interesting to see how Foltynewicz pitches fresh off the DL, however.
