Down at Tropicana Field on Saturday, the Detroit Tigers and the Tampa Bay Rays will be continuing their weekend series.
In Thursday’s opener, the Tigers managed a 10-7 victory. On Friday, Detroit logged a 10-2 win, out-hitting Tampa Bay 14-4 in the game.

For Saturday’s game, the Tigers will be whipping out right-hander Justin Verlander. In his 16 starts and 7-6 record this year, Verlander has managed a 4.30 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP in 104.2 innings of work. On Sunday in a loss to the Indians, Verlander got pelted for eight runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
Detroit has a few key swingers atop their lineup. Ian Kinsler has produced 94 hits with 64 runs, 14 homers and 49 RBI this year. Kinsler came up empty 0-for-5 on Friday, however. Miguel Cabrera is sitting on 92 hits with 47 runs, 18 homers and 51 RBI. Nick Castellanos isn’t far off with 39 runs, 90 hits, 14 homers and 43 RBI of his own.
The Rays will be countering with lefty Blake Snell on Saturday. Over his four starts and 1-2 record in 2016, Snell sits on a 3.54 ERA with a 1.77 WHIP in 20.1 innings. On Monday against the Red Sox, Snell got a win with 5.1 innings pitched, four earned and eight hits.
The Tampa Bay batting order features a few hot players as well. Evan Longoria holds 86 hits with 45 runs, 18 homers and 44 RBI to lead the team in every category. Brad Miller has put up 63 hits with 30 runs, 11 homers and 28 RBI. Miller slapped a two-run homer on Friday for Tampa’s only scoring. Logan Forsythe has hit 61 times with 29 runs and 19 RBI thus far.
The Tigers are 7-2 in their last nine games against a left-handed starter, and 4-1 in Verlander’s last five starts. Detroit is also 2-9 in Verlander’s last 11 starts versus the American League East, and 3-9 in Verlander’s last 12 starts against a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 1-4 in their last five game threes of a series, and 0-4 in their last four Saturday games. Tampa Bay is also 2-7 in their last nine home games and 0-5 in their last five against the American League Central.
I feel like Verlander will bounce back here after a rough outing, so I’ll take the Tigers for another victory.
