The Pittsburgh Pirates look to continue their interleague success as they take on the Oakland Athletics once again on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates head into Oakland on Sunday to continue their series with the Athletics and they will look to improve to 11-1 in their last 12 interleague road games against a team with a losing record while moving closer to the .500 mark. Pittsburgh has been among the league’s bigger disappointments this season as many had them pegged to challenge for the World Series this season after becoming a mainstay in the NL playoffs but they have been very inconsistent and need to step up if they’re going to have any chance at chasing down the Cubs. Pittsburgh may be better suited to make a push for a wild card spot as they are currently just 3.5 games back of the second and final playoff spot in the National League and if they can add a piece to their rotation they will certainly be better of as the likes of today’s starter Francisco Liriano have struggled.

The Athletics meanwhile are eight games back of a wild card spot in the American League and are right about where many people expected them to be this season as they never have the big pieces to make a serious push but a handful of solid players that keep them competitive. However, the few pieces they do have that were supposed to keep them in the playoff picture have been underwhelming as Sonny Gray is having an off year and Josh Reddick the same so the team is leaning on the great play of Danny Valencia who is already in trade discussions as the deadline approaches.
Oakland is 24-9 in their last 33 interleague home games against a lefty, 5-12 in their last 17 Sunday games, and 3-8 in their last 11 home games while the Pirates are 7-1 in Liriano’s last eight Sunday starts, 5-2 in their last seven overall, and 3-10 in their last 13 road games. Oakland will send Daniel Mengden to the mound who is 1-3 with a 2.80 ERA and while his numbers are better than that of Liriano you have to give the edge to the Pirates here who have the better lineup and starting pitching shouldn’t factor in too much here.
