Coming up on Thursday at Rogers Centre in Toronto, the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays will be kicking off their weekend series.
The Tigers just finished up a series against the Indians. Detroit dropped the first two games by a combined 13 runs, then on Wednesday the Tigers came through with a big 12-2 win.
As for the Blue Jays, they’re coming off a set with the Royals. Toronto won games one and two, and in the Wednesday finale the Blue Jays made it a sweep with a 4-2 victory.

For Thursday’s game, the Tigers will be bringing out right-hander Justin Verlander. In his 17 starts and 8-6 record this year, Verlander has produced a 4.11 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP in 111.2 innings. On Saturday against the Rays, Verlander got a win with seven innings pitched, four hits and two runs.
At the plate, it’s pretty easy to find the key hitters in the Detroit lineup. Ian Kinsler heads the way on 100 hits with 71 runs, 16 homers and 52 RBI. Miguel Cabrera is right there as well on 95 hits with 49 runs, 18 homers and 53 RBI. Nick Castellanos has put up 96 hits with 43 runs, 16 homers and 50 RBI. Castellanos put up three hits and a whopping five RBI on Wednesday.
On the other side, the Blue Jays will be going with RHP Drew Hutchison Thursday. We don’t have much this year statistically on Hutchison at the major-league level, with just two appearances (one start) for a 1-0 record, a 5.40 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 6.2 innings. With Marco Estrada currently sidelined (back), Hutchison gets the call here.
Toronto has a pretty enviable lineup this year. Josh Donaldson is way out front on 97 hits with 77 runs, 22 homers and 60 RBI. Edwin Encarnacion has put up 87 hits with 56 runs, 22 homers and 77 RBI. Encarnacion bagged two hits and a run on Wednesday. Kevin Pillar is sitting on 85 hits with 35 runs and 34 RBI thus far.
The Tigers are 6-0 in their last six against the American League East, and 5-1 in Verlander’s last six starts. Detroit is also 5-2 in Verlander’s last seven starts on Astroturf and 1-4 in Verlander’s last five starts in game one of a series.
As for the Blue Jays, they’re 4-0 in their last four against the American League Central, and 1-4 in their last five game ones of a series. Toronto is also 5-0 in their last five overall and 5-0 in their last five home games.
I’m going to stick with Verlander here, as he’s been pitching well. I’ll give the Tigers a surprise win.
