Over at City Field on Friday, the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets will be continuing their series.
In game one of this matchup on Thursday, the Mets managed a 9-7 victory in a game that featured 27 hits overall.
USA TODAY Sports
For Friday’s game, the Nationals will be turning to RHP Stephen Strasburg. In his 15 starts and 11-0 record this year, Strasburg has put up a 2.71 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP in 99.2 innings. On Sunday against the Reds, Strasburg put up 6.2 innings with zero earned on zero hits and five strikeouts.
There’s plenty to like about the Nationals lineup. Daniel Murphy has excelled on 112 hits with 52 runs, 15 homers and 59 RBI this year. Murphy smacked a homer on Thursday. Wilson Ramos holds 85 hits with 38 runs, 13 homers and 47 RBI. Anthony Rendon has hit 82 times with 54 runs and 33 RBI in 2016.
For Friday’s game, the Mets will be going with right-hander Noah Syndergaard. In his 17 games (16 starts) this year alongside a 9-3 record, Syndergaard has a 2.41 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP in 101 innings. On Sunday against the Cubs, Syndergaard put up seven innings with seven hits and just one run for a win.
The Mets are no slouches at the plate, either. Yoenis Cespedes has 87 hits with 47 runs, 21 homers and 52 RBI. Asdrubal Cabrera has hit 81 times with 36 runs, 11 homers and 28 RBI. Cabrera put up a solo homer in Thursday’s game. Neil Walker holds 74 hits with 36 runs, 15 homers and 36 RBI thus far.
The Nationals are 10-1 in Strasburg’s last 11 starts in game two of a series, and 7-0 in Strasburg’s last seven starts versus a team with a winning record. Washington is also 36-15 in Strasburg’s last 41 starts overall, and 2-6 in Strasburg’s last eight Friday starts.
As for the Mets, they’re 21-8 in their last 29 Friday games, and 5-1 in Syndergaard’s last six home starts. New York is also 5-1 in Syndergaard’s last six starts on grass, and 6-2 in Syndergaard’s last eight Friday starts.
I don’t see any reason to go against the grain here, so I’ll take Strasburg and the Nationals for the game two win.
