The Houston Astros travel to Safeco Field to open a series with the rival Seattle Mariners.
The Houston Astros have definitely raised their level of play but at the end od the day they are just a few games ahead of the Mariners in the American League West and there is little room for error. The Astros have won two of three after downing Oakland 2-1 in ten innings in which the pitching saved the day. Stos starter Dallas Keuchel allowed the lone run over seven frames with three relievers tossing a shutout the rest of the way. Houston totaled eight hits a walked once with Evan Gattis driving in a run while Jake Marisnick and Carlos Gomez scored. Right hander Doug Fister will open the series on the mound against the Mariners who he faces for the third time. Overall, Fister has gone 8-6 in 17 starts with a 1.24 WHIP and 3.55 ERA.

The Seattle Mariners are third in the American League West and are competing for a Wild Card unless the Rangers totally collapse. The Mariners won two of three heading to the break capped off by an 8-5 win at Kansas City where the bas did the talking. M’s starte Mike Montgomery gave up a run through 6.1 innings to even his record at 3-3 before the pen allowed four runs to make things interesting. Seattle pounded out 14 hits and walked three times with Adam Lind cracking a three run homer while Robinson Cano homered, drove in two and scored two. Kyle Seager knocked in two more and scored while every starter reached base. The Mariners are slated to send left hander James Paxton to the bump for his second career match up with the Astros. In eight starts Paxton has gone 2-3 with a 1.59 WHIP and 3.91 ERA.
Houston are 7-1 in their last 8 road games and the under is 11-3 in their last 14 road games while going 6-2 in their last 8 on grass. Seattle are 1-7 in Paxton’s last 8 starts on grass and 2-7 in Paxton’s last 9 starts. I think Houston has a slight edge so I’ll back them…
