RHP Yovani Gallardo will be taking the hill for the Orioles on Wednesday. In his 10 starts and 3-1 record this season, Gallardo has put up a 5.77 ERA with a 1.76 WHIP in 48.1 innings. His last time out, Gallardo posted a no-decision against the Rays with five innings, eight hits and three earned.
There’s some great talent in the Baltimore lineup. Manny Machado has secured 111 hits with 63 runs, 19 homers and 54 RBI this year. Mark Trumbo is close behind with his 55 runs, 104 hits, 28 homers and 68 RBI. Jonathan Schoop is getting in on the act with 103 hits, 51 runs, 16 homers and 54 RBI. Machado, Trumbo and Schoop combined to go 0-for-11 on Tuesday.
As for the Yankees, they’ll be starting right-hander Michael Pineda on Wednesday. In his 18 starts and 3-9 mark this year, Pineda has put up a 5.56 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP in 100.1 innings. In a loss against Boston his last time out, Pineda allowed five hits and five earned in five innings.
The veteran New York hitters have had their moments this season. Carlos Beltran has 95 hits to his credit with 45 runs, 19 homers and 58 RBI. Didi Gregorius sits at 94 hits, 41 runs, 11 homers and 41 RBI. Starlin Castro has hit 91 times with 37 runs and 36 RBI. Castro slapped a two-run homer and bagged four RBI on Tuesday.
The Orioles are 5-1 in their last six Wednesday games, and 9-3 in their last 12 game threes of a series. Baltimore is also 5-1 in Gallardo’s last six starts, and 4-1 in Gallardo’s last five starts on grass.
Meanwhile ,the Yankees are 4-1 in their last five game threes of a series, and 1-4 in Pineda’s last five Wednesday starts. New York is also 1-6 in PIneda’s last seven game three starts, and 1-8 in Pineda’s last nine starts against the American League East.
The pitching here could get messy, so I’ll take the over. I’ll give the Orioles a slight winning edge, however, based on offense.
