The Detroit Tigers head to U.S. Cellular Field to face the rival Chicago White Sox Thursday.
The Detroit Tigers have been sitting in second of the American League Central while needing a hot run and Cleveland slump to get back in the division race. With Cleveland threatening to pull away in the division, the Tigers can’t afford to lose so Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to visiting Minnesota hurt. Detroit starter Justin Verlander allowed a solo homer over eight frames for a no decision with Francisco Rodriguez giving up a run in the 9th to get the loss. The Tigers posted nine hits and a base on balls with Ian Kinsler going deep. The Tigers kick off their series at U.S. Cellular with veteran Mike Pelfrey on the hill. Pelfrey comes off of an 8-4 loss to Kansas City with five runs scoring on four hits and four BB over 1.2 innings.

The Chicago White Sox can’t get their arms and bats on the same page and the defeats have been adding up. The trend continued in a 6-5, eleven inning loss at Seattle where a 5-2 lead wasn’t enough to prevent Chicago’s 8th defeat in eleven contests. CWS starter Miguel Gonzalez gave up three runs on four hits through six innings before three relievers gave up a run each. The White Sox logged ten hits and three walks with Todd Frazier smacking a three run bomb while Melky Cabrera went 3-6 with an RBI and two runs. James Shields toes the rubber Thursday against the visiting Tigers shooting for his 5th consecutive quality start. Shields has allowed six runs in his last four outings covering 28.1 frames.
The under is 8-1 in Detroit’s last 9 overall and the over is 8-3-1 in their last 12 Thursday games. The over is 6-2 in the White Sox last 8 home games and is 6-2 in Shields' last 8 starts on grass while going 6-2 in Shields' last 8 starts overall. Shields seems to have found a groove but Chicago doesn’t help him…
