In MLB action from Kauffman Stadium on Friday evening, we’ve got game one of a weekend set between the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals.
The Rangers ran into the buzzsaw of the Angels this week, dropping all three games in their series by a combined nine runs.
USA TODAY Sports
As for the Royals, they just finished up against the Indians. Kansas City won the first game, but dropped the final two to lose the series.
RHP Yu Darvish will be taking the hill for the Rangers on Friday. Over his four starts and 2-1 record this year, Darvish has put up a 3.15 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP in 20 innings. Dervish dropped one to the Cubs in his last outing, surrendering two earned on two hits in 4.1 innings.
Backing up Darvish at the Texas plate will be a crew of pretty capable hitters. Ian Desmond has logged 120 hits this year with 69 runs, 18 homers and 58 RBI. Rougned Odor is sitting on 98 hits with 60 runs, 17 homers and 48 RBI so far. Adrian Beltre has hit safely 93 times with 48 runs and 57 RBI in 2016.
Countering for the Royals on Friday will be southpaw Danny Duffy. Across 28 appearances (12 starts) and a 5-1 mark this season, Duffy has logged a 3.27 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP in 88 innings. In Detroit the last time we saw him pitch, Duffy went 6.1 innings with six hits, four earned and seven strikeouts in a win.
On offense, we’ve got a handful of pretty well-rounded bats for Kansas City. Eric Hosmer has hit 106 times to lead the team alongside 49 runs, 13 homers and 51 RBI. Alcides Escobar holds an even 100 hits with 31 runs, 23 RBI and 12 steals. Salvador Perez has a solid .277 BA with 86 hits, 37 runs, 14 homers and 43 RBI on the year.
The Rangers are 1-5 in their last six against the American League Central, and 1-5 in their last six games following a loss. Texas is also 1-7 in their last eight overall, and 0-4 in their last four game ones of a series.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 37-15 in their last 52 home games, and 4-10 in their last 14 overall. Kansas City is also 4-0 in Duffy’s last four starts, and 4-1 in Duffy’s last five starts against the American League West.
I don’t feel too strongly either way for this game, as both the Rangers and the Royals are flailing right now. I’ll give Kansas City and Duffy a slight edge, however.
