In Monday MLB action from Marlins Park, we’ve got game one action coming between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins.
The Phillies are coming off a weekend gig against the Pirates. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh split the first two games of that one, then on Sunday after an extended rain delay, the Phillies dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker.

As for the Marlins, they tangled with the Mets over the weekend. Miami and New York also split their first two games, then in Sunday’s rubber match the Marlins dropped the series by a score of 3-0.
Pitching for the Phillies on Monday will be RHP Jeremy Hellickson, who has been mired in trade talks lately. Over his 20 starts and 7-7 record this season, Hellickson has put up a 3.84 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP in 119.2 innings. During his last start against these same Marlins, Hellickson put up eight innings of one-earned ball for a victory on five hits.
It’s not too hard to find the stars in the Phillies lineup. Odubel Herrera leads the way with his 1067hits, 56 runs, 11 homers and 35 RBI. Herrera slapped a homer on Sunday. Maikel Franco has knocked 90 hits with 37 runs, 18 homers and 55 RBI of his own. As for Freddy Galvis, he’s got 85 hits with 38 runs and 37 RBI thus far.
Over on the Marlins side, we’ll be seeing Jarred Cosart make the start for the injured Wei-Yin Chen on Monday. With just three starts in the bigs this year, Cosart owns an 0-1 mark with a 7.98 ERA and a 2.11 WHIP. Back on April 22 in his last appearance, Cosart put up 4.1 innings with eight hits and six earned for a rough loss.
Thankfully, the Marlins have some firepower at the plate. Martin Prado has been blazing on 118 hits with 41 runs and 35 RBI. Prado slapped three hits on Sunday. Christian Yelich owns 112 hits with 51 runs and 54 RBI so far. Marcel Ozuna has hit 106 times with 55 runs, 17 homers and 52 RBI in 2016.
The Phillies are 5-14 in their last 19 game ones of a series, and 6-21 in their last 27 Monday games. Philadelphia is also 4-1 in Hellickson’s last five starts, and 0-4 in Hellickson’s last four Monday starts.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are 8-3 in their last 11 Monday games, and 9-4 in their last 13 overall. Miami is also 6-2 in their last eight home games and 4-2 in their last six home games versus a right-handed starter.
There’s not a whole lot to like about this game besides Hellickson, who I think can tame the Marlins here. I’ll take the Phillies.
