Coming our way in MLB action on Tuesday evening, we’ve got game one of the opening series between the Seattle Mariners and the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
The Mariners are coming off a weekend series versus the Blue Jays. Seattle won the first of those two matchups, but dropped Sunday’s game to prevent the sweep.

As for the Pirates, they just locked up with the Phillies this weekend. Pittsburgh dropped Friday’s game 4-0 but came back to take the series with victories in the next two games.
Pitching for the Mariners in Tuesday’s opener will be right-hander Felix Hernandez. Over his 11 starts and 4-4 record this year, Hernandez has put up a 3.23 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP in 69.2 innings total. In his last start, Hernandez had a rough outing against the White Sox with 10 hits, five runs and a no-decision in 6.2 innings.
Hitting for the Seattle lineup, it’s easy to find the stars. Robinson Cano has put up 121 hits to lead the team, alongside 67 runs, 22 homers and 61 RBI. Kyle Seager holds 104 hits with 57 runs, 19 homers and 65 RBI for his part. Nelson Cruz also has 102 hits with 58 runs, 25 homers and 65 RBI so far.
LHP Francisco Liriano will be making the start for the Pirates on Tuesday. Over his 19 starts and 6-9 record this year, Liriano holds a 4.96 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP in 105.1 innings. At home against Milwaukee in his last start, LIriano bagged a win with 6.2 innings, four hits and two earned.
At the plate, Pittsburgh has some pretty interesting hitters as well. Starling Marte has knocked 109 hits with 54 runs, seven homers and 35 RBI. Gregory Polanco is sitting on 91 hits with 53 RBI, 12 homers and 54 runs. As for Andrew McCutchen, he’s got 90 hits with 53 runs, 14 homers and 38 RBI for a .244 BA on the year.
The Mariners are 5-0 in their last five games following a rolls, and 8-2 in their last 10 interleague road games. Seattle is also 4-12 in their last 16 road games, and 5-2 in Hernandez’s last seven starts.
As for the Pirates, they’re 5-2 in their last seven overall, and 20-8 in their last 28 games following an off day. Pittsburgh is also 5-2 in their last seven Tuesday games, and 1-4 in their last five interleague home games.
This one’s a tough call, but I’ll take LIriano and the Pirates at home here.
