The St. Louis Cardinals look to improve their play at home as they welcome in the lowly Atlanta Braves on Friday for a weekend set.
The Braves’ season nof misery took a positive turn at least for one night last night as they chopped down the Pirates to the tune of a 5-2 victory and now head into St. Louis looking to spoil the party for the Cardinals who run the risk of missing out on this year’s postseason. Atlanta hasn’t been good since the first pitch of the season and while they did make some moves that could help them rebound quickly they are still quit a few pieces away from being relevant and it could be another long season of baseball in the Peach State next year if they can’t address those issues in the offseason.

The Cards meanwhile haven’t had the greatest season either but unlike the Braves they have a playoff calibre roster and if they can stay hot down the stretch they could claw their way back in, especially if the other wild card contenders falter. St. Louis currently sits tied for the second wild card spot with the Miami Marlins but a handful of teams are within three games of that spot and it will be highly coveted as the divisional leads have started to take shape and the wild card may be the only gate way into the playoffs for a lot of teams. Jaime Garcia will get the call here for the Cards as the vet looks to cruise to another win against one of the game’s worst sides.
Atlanta is 27-61 in their last 88 road games, 1-5 in their last six series openers, and 8-17 in their last 25 against the NL Central while the Cards are 1-4 in their last five overall, 5-1 in Garcia’s last six starts following a team loss and 8-17 in their last 25 Friday games. The Cards aren’t playing well at the moment but they know the magnitude of this series and they start it off right as they hammer the Braves.
