The Pittsburgh Pirates battle the San Diego Padres in the final game of their series at PNC Park.
The San Diego Padres are finishing out the season with an eye towards next year. The Padres stopped a two game skid with a 4-0 win at PNC Park behind outstanding work on the mound. SD starter Edwin Jackson got the win with seven scoreless frames while striking out seven. San Diego did their damage on six hits and a pair of free passes with Alexei Ramirez knocking in an earned run on a single. San Diego is scheduled to start Christian Friedrich in the series finale’ versus the Pirates. Friedrich comes off of a 5-4 loss to the Phillies with four runs given up on five hits over seven innings.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a team that has to make a move and get as far above .500 as possible or kiss the playoffs goodbye. The Pirates had won three of four and really needed to win Wednesday but their defense and bats faltered. Pitt starter Ryan Vogelsong gave up a pair of unearned runs through six innings on just three hits to absorb the loss while Juan Nicasio allowed a pair of runs. The Buccos were held to two hits and three walks with Andrew McCutchen and Jordy Mercer cracking doubles. Rookie Jameson Taillon toes the rubber versus the Padres for the first time on Thursday. Taillon did not get a decision last time out in a 3-1 win versus Cincinnati with a run allowed in six frames.
San Diego are 3-11 in their last 14 road games and the over is 11-3 in Friedrich’s last 14 starts overall. The over is 36-17 in Pittsburgh’s last 53 home games. I’m backing Pittsburgh but at this point in the season we have to realize the Pirates are not that good…
